U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, posted a series of tweets on July 22 and 23, 2025, addressing issues ranging from immigration enforcement to congressional oversight of arms sales.
On July 22, Jayapal stated her position on the use of military forces for immigration purposes: “The National Guard should not be used to conduct any form of immigration enforcement — full stop.”
Later that day, she shared details about a meeting with Mahmoud Khalil, highlighting concerns over free speech and immigrant rights: “Today I had the honor of meeting with Mahmoud Khalil, who was imprisoned for 104 days just for speaking out against the war in Gaza. We had an important and productive conversation about Trump’s attacks on all immigrants and free speech and how we can keep fighting back.”
On July 23, Jayapal criticized recent legislative actions by Republican lawmakers regarding foreign weapons sales: “Republicans passed a bill out of committee that weakens Congress’ ability to weigh in when Trump wants to sell drones, bombs, and other weapons to foreign governments. They’re hiding these weapon sales from the public and removing all oversight.”
Jayapal has served as a member of Congress since 2017 after replacing Jim McDermott. She previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965, Jayapal resides in Seattle and holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
