Rep. Pramila Jayapal, U.S. Congresswoman representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing her opposition to certain legislative measures and concerns over accountability in government.
On January 22, 2026, Jayapal publicly declared her vote against funding for the Department of Homeland Security, stating, “I just voted HELL NO on legislation to fund Trump’s Department of Homeland Security. Democrats can’t be complicit as ICE & Border Patrol terrorize our communities and violate our laws & constitutional rights daily. We shouldn’t give DHS another cent until real reforms are made.”
Later that day, she referenced Special Counsel Jack Smith’s comments regarding legal accountability for powerful individuals: “Jack Smith: ‘If we do not hold the most powerful people in our society to the same standards… if we don’t hold people to account when they commit crimes, it sends a message that those crimes are okay.’ Trump was let off the hook for Jan 6. That is destructive for our democracy.”
On January 23, Jayapal continued her focus on the issue by noting Smith’s testimony before Congress: “Special Counsel Jack Smith testified in front of the Judiciary Committee today. His findings are clear: Donald Trump tried to steal the 2020 election. There must be accountability to protect our democracy.”
Jayapal has served as a member of Congress since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017 and previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle, she holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
