U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, posted a series of statements on January 6, 2026, addressing concerns about the aftermath of the January 6 Capitol attack and ongoing threats to American democracy.
In her first post on January 6, Jayapal wrote, “What does the complete lack of accountability for those who attacked the Capitol on January 6th mean? Similar or even worse acts of violence could easily happen again in the future. That’s incredibly dangerous for our country and our democracy.”
Later that day, she commented further: “For 5 years, Trump and Republicans have tried to erase and rewrite the story of January 6th — the day a violent mob stormed the Capitol and tried to overturn the 2020 election. Now, as he continues acting like a dictator, the strength of our democracy is being tested.”
In her final post on January 6, Jayapal shared a personal recollection from inside the Capitol during the events of January 6: “To this day, I vividly hear the pounding on the doors of the House Chamber, the screaming of the insurrectionists threatening to kill us. Don’t let Trump and Republicans lie to you — January 6th was a violent attack on our Capitol and our democracy.”
Pramila Jayapal has served as a U.S. Representative since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott. She previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and now residing in Seattle, Jayapal graduated from Georgetown University in 1986 before earning an additional degree from Northwestern University in 1990.
