Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, recently used her social media platform to address both community celebrations and urgent national issues.
On September 22, 2025, Jayapal posted a message for those observing the Jewish New Year: “Shana Tovah to all who celebrate! Wishing everyone a sweet new year!”
The following day, on September 23, 2025, she addressed concerns regarding immigrant detention policies in the United States: “Congress was just notified of the 15th death in ICE custody since Trump took office. This is the direct result of this administration expanding the use of private, for-profit prisons that put their bottom line over people’s health and safety.”
Later that same day, Jayapal commented on developments related to federal government funding negotiations: “BREAKING: Trump just backed out of his meeting on govt funding with Democratic leadership. The govt shuts down in 7 days, but Trump & Republicans are refusing to even come to the table to prevent millions from losing health care. If there is a shutdown, it will be on the GOP.”
Pramila Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District in Congress since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017 and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and now residing in Seattle, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
