Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, used her social media platform on September 8, 2025, to address concerns about congressional stock trading, former President Donald Trump’s statements regarding unreleased files, and alleged corruption linked to defense spending.
In a post made at 18:41 UTC, Jayapal stated, “Members of Congress should not be trading stocks, period. It’s past time to ban this practice and hold people accountable, and that’s exactly what we’re doing with our bipartisan Restore Trust in Congress Act.”
Later that day at 19:06 UTC, she referenced claims by former President Trump regarding certain files. Jayapal wrote, “Trump said it didn’t exist, but here it is. Thank you @OversightDems for proving he is lying. And if he’s lying about this, what else is he lying about? Makes it clear why he is so opposed to releasing these files….”
At 19:32 UTC on the same day, Jayapal commented on defense budget allocations and private financial interests: “Corruption, pure and simple, all at tax-payer expense. That giant defense budget? All goes to boost profits for Trump’s 1789 Capital, which dramatically increased its portfolio to include defense contractors—& has now topped $1 billion. #WasteFraudAbuse”
Pramila Jayapal succeeded Jim McDermott in Congress in 2017 after previously serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai (formerly Madras State) in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
