Rep. Pramila Jayapal, U.S. Congresswoman representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, used her social media platform on October 2, 2025, to criticize Republican policies and their impact on health care and food assistance programs.
In a post at 14:56 UTC, Jayapal commented on the priorities of former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, stating: “This tells you all you need to know about Trump and Republicans’ priorities.”
Later that day at 16:53 UTC, she addressed changes to Medicaid and accusations directed at undocumented immigrants: “Republicans are destroying our health care system by gutting Medicaid through their Big Bad Betrayal — in red and blue states. So to deflect blame, they’re lying and pointing their fingers at undocumented immigrants — who aren’t even eligible for federal Medicaid!”
At 18:48 UTC, Jayapal warned of the consequences of a government shutdown in her state: “The Republican shutdown will cause over 200k mothers and children in Washington State to lose food assistance. Thanks to Trump and Republicans, more people will be hungry. It’s time for them to do their jobs and end this shutdown.”
Jayapal has served as the representative for Washington’s 7th District since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017. Before joining Congress, she was a member of the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965, Jayapal currently resides in Seattle. She holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
