Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, used her social media platform on March 7, 2026, to criticize the conditions of ICE detention facilities and call attention to Women’s History Month.
In her first post on March 7, Jayapal stated, “DHS can put out all the talking points they want, but communities know these ICE warehouses are miserable, cruel, badly-run, for-profit prisons that no-one wants in their backyards.” Later that day, she followed up with another message referencing an investigation into one such facility: “Here’s just one horrifying account of one of these horrific facilities that @RepEscobar and I wrote to DHS about. Leaked reports suggest that DHS is now considering closing this facility.”
Shifting focus in a subsequent tweet on the same day, Jayapal recognized Women’s History Month and addressed ongoing political issues affecting women: “March is Women’s History Month — a time to honor and celebrate the contributions of women in our communities and across the globe. At a moment Trump and his DOJ is silencing survivors and attempting to strip women of their rights, we must continue our fight for justice.”
Pramila Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District in Congress since 2017 after serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Jayapal graduated from Georgetown University in 1986 and earned another degree from Northwestern University in 1990.
