The University of Washington women’s tennis team defeated Penn State 4-1 in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament on April 23, advancing to face UCLA in the next round. With this victory, head coach Robin Stephenson became the program’s all-time winningest coach with her 193rd win, surpassing Lisa Moldrem’s previous record of 192 wins over 14 seasons.
The achievement highlights a significant milestone for both Stephenson and the Huskies’ tennis program. The team’s performance also demonstrates their strong position heading further into tournament play.
Penn State started strong by winning the doubles point after victories on Courts 1 and 3. Despite losing doubles, Washington gained momentum towards the end and carried it into singles play. In singles matches, Washington won all six first sets for only the second time this season.
Reece Carter, ranked No. 52 nationally and playing at No. 1 for her first match this season in that spot, was first to finish with a straight-set win (6-2, 6-2), tying up the overall score. Jermine Sherif added another point with a decisive victory at No. 4 (6-1, 6-3). Karolina Kozakova followed with a straight-set win at No. 6 (6-2, 6-3), putting Washington one point from clinching.
Erika Matsuda secured the match for Washington by winning her contest on Court 2 (6-4, 6-4). The Huskies will now prepare to meet fourth-seeded UCLA on Friday morning.
This result not only marks an individual coaching milestone but also keeps Washington’s postseason hopes alive as they continue through tournament competition.
