Three University of Washington athletes broke school records during the Stanford Invitational on Apr. 3, as the outdoor track season gained momentum. Ashley Schroeder set a new mark in the women’s javelin, while Chloe Thomas and Evan Jenkins both recorded the fastest times in UW history for the women’s and men’s 10,000-meter runs.
These achievements highlight a strong start to the outdoor season for UW’s track and field program. Breaking long-standing records signals progress for both individual athletes and the team as a whole.
Schroeder surpassed her personal best by 15 feet with an opening throw of 175-feet, 10-inches in the javelin, breaking a record that had stood for fifteen years. Later that evening, Thomas ran her first-ever track 10k in 32:19.59—just one second faster than Izzi Batt-Doyle’s previous school record from 2019—while Jenkins lowered his own men’s record to 28:03.51.
Other notable performances included Alex Rhodes winning the men’s 400-meters with a career-best time of 45.22 seconds—the fastest by a Husky since 2008—and Jonathan Frazier setting a personal best in the prelims of the men’s hurdles at 14.26 seconds before placing fourth overall in another event later that day.
The meet also saw several other Huskies move up UW’s all-time lists or achieve personal bests across various events such as sprints, hurdles, distance races, throws and multi-events competitions. Notably, Saydi Orange returned after injury to post a javelin throw of over eleven feet better than her previous best; Teko Cates improved his long jump PR three times during competition; Maeve Stiles climbed to No.7 all-time for UW women’s distance running; Isaac Briggs entered UW’s top-10 steeplechase list; and Reuben Reina moved up to fifth place on Husky history charts with his performance in men’s distance running.
These results suggest strong prospects for Washington Huskies Track & Field this season as athletes continue their progression toward championship meets.
