Seattle University softball lost 7-6 to the University of San Diego on May 7 after a close contest at Reggie Smith Softball Complex. The Redhawks trailed early but managed to hold the Toreros scoreless for five consecutive innings before falling short in their final inning comeback.
The result leaves both teams with identical records of 19-30 overall and 5-11 in the West Coast Conference. The game was significant as both teams fought for positioning late in the season.
Junior Karen Spadafora led Seattle with two hits and a run scored, while junior Avari Morris contributed two runs and reached her 73rd base hit of the season. Graduate Jay Ross and senior Brooklyn Jones combined for four runs batted in, each collecting hits, with Jones recording the team’s only extra-base hit. Junior Sophia Kissling and freshman Aurora Zepeda also added singles during the game.
In pitching, junior Ellie Bostedt threw a season-high 5.1 innings, facing 22 batters and striking out two. Sophomore Maya Mesa started on the mound, pitching less than an inning. Defensively, Ross recorded eight putouts at first base while Bostedt matched her career high with three assists; Jones also tallied three assists.
San Diego scored all seven of its runs in the bottom of the first inning on six hits, including five extra-base hits. Seattle began its comeback in the second inning when Jones doubled to left center field to drive home Spadafora and sophomore Abbie Fales—after a successful challenge overturned an initial out call at home plate. In later innings, Zepeda and Kissling opened up opportunities that allowed Ross to single down the left field line, scoring additional runs aided by a fielding error from San Diego.
Despite keeping San Diego off the scoreboard through most of the game’s remainder—including back-to-back one-two-three innings from Bostedt—the Redhawks were unable to bring home enough runners in their final at-bats. In their last opportunity, Morris scored after reaching third base but Seattle could not tie or take over before recording their final outs.
Seattle is scheduled to play again tomorrow afternoon for game two against San Diego at Reggie Smith Softball Complex.
