The Seattle University track and field team will divide its roster to compete in two separate events, according to an April 13 announcement. The Redhawks are set to participate in the Bryan Clay Invitational from April 16-18 in Azusa, California, and the Larry Byerly Invitational from April 17-18 in Portland, Oregon.
This split-squad approach allows athletes to compete at both venues. The Bryan Clay Invitational has become a regular fixture for Seattle U since 2022. Last season, the Redhawks achieved five all-time top-10 marks at this meet. Notably, Alex Jensen set a school record in the 800-meter run that still stands today.
Current team members Seku Sanders and Annabelle Clapp also posted personal bests at last year’s Bryan Clay Invitational—Sanders did so in both the 800-meter and 1500-meter races while Clapp achieved hers in the 800-meter event.
At the Larry Byerly Invitational, which Seattle U attended last year as well, Matthew Fiso broke the triple jump school record by nearly half a meter with a leap of 14.28 meters. Fiso is expected to challenge his own mark after recording a jump of 14.11 meters earlier this month at another meet.
Seattle U athletes set a total of fourteen personal bests during last year’s Larry Byerly Invitational—including thirteen by current team members—suggesting strong potential for further achievements this weekend. The Redhawks are looking to build on momentum from their previous split-squad outing on April 3-4 when they combined for thirteen personal bests across two different meets; Dan Barreto’s steeplechase time of nine minutes forty-seven point sixteen seconds was among those performances and now ranks tenth all-time in school history.
Events at the Bryan Clay Invitational will start Thursday morning while competition begins Friday afternoon at the Larry Byerly Invitational.
