The Seattle University track and field team will divide its athletes for competitions at two different meets during the upcoming weekend, according to a Mar. 31 announcement.
The decision to split the squad allows more athletes to compete in events that best suit their specialties. This approach is intended to provide opportunities for both distance runners and field event specialists to pursue personal bests and school records.
One group of Redhawks will travel to San Francisco for the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, taking place from April 3-4. The other group will remain in Washington state for the Whitworth Peace Meet on April 3 in Spokane. The Mike Fanelli Track Classic, hosted by San Francisco State University, focuses on distance events and has been a regular fixture for Seattle U since 2023. Last year’s participation saw the Redhawks achieve ten new top-10 times across both this meet and the Stanford Invitational.
This season, several athletes are positioned to improve their standings in school history. For women, Annabelle Clapp currently holds notable times in both the 400m (seventh-fastest) and 800m (fourth-best). Azalea Groleau owns the school record in the 5000m as well as high rankings in other distance events. On the men’s side, Porter Buck aims to better his ninth-best steeplechase time set last month, while Roman Radecki seeks entry into program records after a strong cross country season.
At Whitworth Peace Meet, Zoe Tibbo ranks among Seattle U’s top performers in long jump and triple jump; Lydia Dale recently achieved one of the fastest steeplechase times for women at Seattle U. Men’s competitors Seku Sanders and Osaze Demund hold some of fastest historical marks for the 800m event; Matthew Fiso is noted as triple jump record holder with JR Zamora following closely behind.
Both meets are scheduled with early morning start times: Mike Fanelli Track Classic begins at 8:30 a.m., while Whitworth Peace Meet starts at 9:55 a.m.
