Seattle University softball lost to Loyola Marymount University 7-5 at Logan Field on Sunday afternoon, April 19. The Redhawks (18-23, 4-5 West Coast Conference) overcame an early deficit but were unable to complete a comeback in the seventh inning against the Lions (28-15, 5-4 WCC).

The game was notable for senior Ava Sin’s performance. Sin led Seattle U with two extra-base hits and scored three runs, setting a new career high. Junior Karen Spadafora contributed two runs batted in with her double. Sophomore Abbie Fales also hit a double, scoring once and driving in another run.

Graduate Jay Ross, junior Avari Morris, and freshman Aurora Zepeda each recorded hits during the contest. Ross anchored the defense with eight putouts at first base while Zepeda and senior Brooklyn Jones each made three assists.

Freshman Kaia Galaviz started as pitcher for Seattle U and threw four innings, facing twenty batters and striking out four. Sophomore Maya Mesa pitched the final three innings without allowing an earned run.

Galaviz began strong by retiring the first three batters she faced with two strikeouts. The Redhawks had opportunities early but could not capitalize until breaking through in the fourth inning when Fales drove in Sin with a double and Zepeda followed up by bringing home Fales from second base.

LMU responded by adding runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to maintain their lead. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Seattle U attempted a late rally after senior Taylor Fitch drew a walk and Sin doubled to put runners on base. Spadafora’s double brought them within two runs before LMU closed out the game.

Seattle University will travel next week for a three-game series at Oregon State before returning home for their final games of the season against Santa Clara during senior weekend.
