Seattle University softball lost to Saint Mary’s by a score of 2-1 at Logan Field on April 11. The Redhawks had runners on the corners late in the game but were unable to bring home the tying run, ending their comeback attempt.
The matchup was significant as it pitted Seattle (17-21, 3-2 West Coast Conference) against Saint Mary’s (29-11, 5-0 WCC), with both teams competing for conference standings. Despite out-hitting the Gaels six to five after managing only one hit in the first game of the series, Seattle could not convert key opportunities into runs.
Senior Brooklyn Jones led Seattle with two hits. Graduate student Jay Ross drove in senior Ava Sin with an RBI double for Seattle’s only extra-base hit and run. Juniors Avari Morris and Mikee Morris also contributed singles. Morris started as pitcher, going five innings with two strikeouts and allowing one earned run on five hits. Freshman Kaia Galaviz pitched two scoreless innings in relief, striking out three batters without allowing a hit.
Defensively, junior Karen Spadafora and Ross combined for ten putouts while Mikee Morris made two assists between second and third base. The Redhawks kept pace early as Morris delivered a three up, three down first inning before recording her fourth stolen base of the season but was left stranded.
Saint Mary’s took an early lead with an RBI double in the second inning. After tying it up through Ross’s RBI double scoring Sin from first base in the fourth inning, Seattle surrendered another RBI double to fall behind again in the fifth. Despite late-game efforts—including Jones reaching third base—the Redhawks could not score again as Saint Mary’s defense held firm.
Seattle will host Saint Mary’s once more at Logan Field for their final weekend matchup.
