Seattle University softball lost to Santa Clara 1-0 at Logan Field on Saturday afternoon, according to a May 2 announcement. The Redhawks were unable to score the go-ahead runs despite a strong defensive showing.

The game was marked by solid performances from several Seattle U players. Senior Ava Sin led with two hits in three at bats and tied for second all-time for doubles in a single season with her nineteenth double. Junior Avari Morris picked up her seventy-first base hit of the season as she continues to pursue the single-season hits record. Senior Taylor Fitch and junior Sophia Kissling also contributed base hits.

Sophomore Maya Mesa started for Seattle U and pitched a complete game, facing thirty batters and striking out five over seven innings. Mesa held Santa Clara scoreless through the final five frames after giving up an early run. Graduate Jay Ross made seven putouts at first base, while senior Brooklyn Jones matched her career high with four assists at second base.

Both teams had opportunities but struggled offensively throughout the contest. In the first inning, Seattle U left two runners in scoring position after Sin’s double but could not bring them home. Santa Clara scored its only run on an RBI single following loaded bases in the top of the second inning, but Mesa struck out another batter to end that threat without further damage.

In later innings, both teams continued their defensive battle with quick outs and stranded runners. The Redhawks managed runners on corners in the fifth inning and had two more reach base in the sixth but were unable to convert these chances into runs as Santa Clara preserved its shutout victory.

The series between Seattle University and Santa Clara will conclude Sunday with Senior Day celebrations honoring Ross, Jones, Sin, and Fitch.
