The Seattle Police Department continues to increase the number of guns taken into custody in 2023 – surpassing totals from prior years.

According to the latest numbers provided by SPD’s Data-Driven Policing Unit, 138 guns were taken into custody in May 2023, with 629 firearms taken into custody year-to-date.

This is the highest total on record for the first five months of the year, exceeding 2018 totals of 621 guns.

Included in these totals are 39 firearms which were forfeited at the SPD Range for destruction.

The safety of community members and visitors remains a top priority for our department. We remain committed to addressing concerns surrounding violent crimes involving firearms.
