The Washington Huskies men’s baseball team lost to the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 5-4, in a game played on April 11 that was marked by significant weather delays in Minneapolis.
The loss moves Washington’s record to 16-20 overall and 7-8 in Big Ten conference play. The teams attempted to avoid inclement weather by moving up the first pitch by half an hour, but were still affected by rain and lightning. Although the game began at 12:30 p.m. Pacific Time, the second inning was not completed until after 5:30 p.m. due to a nearly four-hour rain delay followed by a thirty-minute lightning delay.
Hayden Lewis started for Washington and pitched one inning before the game was interrupted; he allowed one hit and one run while facing four batters. After play resumed, Gunnar Nichols took over pitching duties for the Huskies, finishing with five and one-third innings pitched, eight hits allowed, four runs surrendered, and three strikeouts. Nichols was credited with the loss.
Offensively, Colton Bower recorded two of Washington’s six hits on the day and drove in one run. Landon Young led with two RBIs from a triple in the fifth inning. Jackson Hotchkiss, Blake Wilson, and Ty Cowan also contributed hits during the contest. Tommy Brandenburg closed out pitching for Washington with one-and-two-thirds innings pitched while allowing just one hit.
Looking ahead, Washington will play Seattle University on Tuesday at 4 p.m., followed by hosting Michigan State for a three-game series at Husky Ballpark.
