Washington baseball team loses to Gonzaga in first of two-game series

The Washington Huskies baseball team lost to Gonzaga 9-2 at Husky Ballpark on Apr. 6. The defeat marks the first of two games against the Bulldogs, bringing Washington’s record to 17-15.

The game began with Gonzaga scoring four runs in the first inning and maintaining their lead throughout. Washington responded with two runs in the fourth but was unable to close the gap for a comeback.

Liam Lierman started as pitcher for Washington, allowing four runs and four hits in the opening inning before settling down and pitching two scoreless frames with two strikeouts. Jaxson Gore relieved him for the fourth and fifth innings, giving up only one hit while striking out three batters.

In Washington’s half of the fourth inning, Sam DeCarlo led off with a double, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch. Blake Wilson also scored from first base after Ty Cowan hit a double; however, Cowan was tagged out trying to reach third base.

Jack Wade, Peysen Sweeney, Tyler Walker, and Jay Miller pitched the final four innings for Washington. DeCarlo led Husky hitters with two hits during the game.

Washington will play Gonzaga again on Tuesday at noon in their last home game of this series.
