The University of Washington women’s gymnastics team defeated No. 29 San José State with a score of 195.550–195.000 in the first round of regionals, according to an April 2 announcement.

This result allows Washington, ranked No. 35, to move forward in the regional competition and face higher-seeded teams in the next round.

Washington began the meet on bars, where Mary McDonough and Lilly Tubbs each scored a 9.900 to tie for first place on that event. Evelyn DeYoung achieved a career-best score of 9.825 on bars during only her third appearance in the lineup, while Deiah Moody contributed a score of 9.800.

On vault, Tubbs and Jessica Schaffer led with scores of 9.775 each, tying for third overall in that event. McDonough and Lana Navarro followed closely behind with scores of 9.750 apiece.

The floor exercise saw Kristin Lin and Navarro both earn scores of 9.850, tying for second overall; this marked a season-high for Navarro on floor. Caitlin McWilliams posted a score of 9.825 while Kira Bolden and Chelsea Hallinan added matching scores of 9.800.

Washington closed out the competition on beam with Tubbs again leading at a score of 9.900—her third time achieving this mark since adding beam to her events this year—and Moody following with a score of 9.875 for second place overall on beam.

Lin finished as Washington’s top all-around competitor with a total score of 38.950 across all four events.

The Huskies will compete again tomorrow evening against UCLA (No.4 seed), Minnesota (No.13 seed), and Iowa in the second round at Gill Coliseum.
