Washington achieved three podium finishes on May 16 during the second day of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska. The university’s track and field team secured a silver medal from Teko Cates in the decathlon and bronze medals from Sofia Cosculluela in the long jump and Isaac Briggs in the steeplechase.
The women’s team now holds second place overall with 66 points, trailing Illinois, which leads with 73 points. The men’s team stands fifth with 25 points, while Oregon leads with 55.
Cosculluela broke a school record that had stood since 1984 by leaping 21-1½ into a headwind on her first attempt in the long jump. She also advanced to Sunday’s final in the women’s 100-meter hurdles after running a time of 13.42 seconds. Cosculluela’s four jumps at this meet were all personal bests for her Husky career, and she finished just two inches short of victory.
Teko Cates recorded a personal-best score of 7,632 points to finish second in the decathlon. This result puts him close to qualifying for the NCAA Championships and just six points shy of breaking the UW freshman record set by Mike Ramos in 1982. In his events on day two, Cates achieved new personal records in both discus and pole vault.
Isaac Briggs improved upon his seventh-place finish last year by taking third place in the men’s steeplechase with a time of 8:50.98. Cruize Corvin also made significant progress by moving up from twenty-third last year to seventh this year.
Looking ahead to Sunday’s finals, Washington has qualified athletes for several events including Alex Rhodes (men’s 400 meters), Chloe Foerster (women’s and men’s middle-distance events), Chloe Symon (women’s 800 meters), Martin Barco (men’s 800 meters), and Sofia Cosculluela (women’s hurdles). The championships will conclude Sunday.
