Washington gymnastics advances to regionals after second place at Big Ten Championship

Washington gymnastics secured a spot in the postseason after placing second in the first session of the Big Ten Championship on March 20. The team scored 195.475, finishing behind Rutgers, which posted a 195.700. Illinois and Nebraska followed with scores of 195.125 and 195.075, respectively.

The result means Washington will advance to regionals, continuing their season with another opportunity to compete at a high level. The team’s performance was highlighted by strong individual routines across all events.

Washington began the meet on vault, where Lilly Tubbs led with a score of 9.825, earning second place for the event. Mary McDonough contributed a 9.775 and Jessica Schaffer added a 9.700 to close out the rotation.

On bars, Tubbs matched her season-high with a score of 9.925, tying for first place in that event. Deiah Moody and McDonough each scored 9.800, while Kristin Lin added a 9.750 as part of the team’s second-highest event total of the night at 48.950.

The beam rotation saw Olivia Oppegard lead Washington with a score of 9.825 to tie for third place, followed by Lana Navarro’s and Chelsea Hallinan’s contributions.

Washington finished on floor exercise with its highest event total of the evening at 49.175 points, led by Caitlin McWilliams’ score of 9.900 to tie for second place overall in that event.

Kristin Lin finished second in the all-around competition with a total score of 39.050.

The GymDawgs are scheduled to return for an awards ceremony at the Big Ten Championships on Saturday, March 21.
