The Washington Huskies men’s baseball team defeated Michigan 7-5 in the series finale on April 26. The victory improved the Huskies’ record to 19-24 overall and 9-12 in Big Ten play.
This win is significant for Washington as it helps them rebound during their road trip and maintain competitiveness within the conference standings.
Michigan started the game with a leadoff home run, but Washington responded in the third inning when Braeden Terry hit a two-run home run to right field, giving the Huskies a lead they would not relinquish. Terry’s home run was his third of the season and traveled 408 feet. In the fourth inning, Mic Paul added another solo home run for Washington, his third of the year, extending their advantage.
After DeCarlo contributed a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1 for Washington, Michigan narrowed the gap by scoring one run each in both the fifth and sixth innings. However, Washington answered with three runs in the seventh inning, capped by an RBI single from Aidan Dougherty. Michigan attempted a late comeback with two runs in the ninth inning but was held off by Tommy Brandenburg who preserved the win for Washington.
Hayden Lewis earned credit for the win after pitching six innings with nine hits allowed, three runs given up, one walk issued and three strikeouts recorded. Jack Wade and Tommy Brandenburg pitched three combined innings out of relief allowing only one hit while conceding two runs along with five walks and two strikeouts.
Looking ahead, Washington will finish its road trip at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday morning.
