The Washington Huskies baseball team defeated Michigan State 8-5 on Sunday afternoon, April 19, after hitting two home runs during the game.

The win brings the Huskies’ record to 17-22 overall and 8-10 in Big Ten play. The victory is significant as it helps Washington improve its standing in conference competition.

Washington took an early lead in the third inning by scoring five runs. Sam DeCarlo began the rally with an RBI single, followed by a sacrifice fly from Blake Wilson to make it 2-0. Mic Paul then hit his second career home run, a two-run shot that traveled 410 feet to deep right field, increasing the lead to five runs.

Michigan State responded with four runs in the fourth inning, narrowing Washington’s advantage to one run. However, Casen Taggart answered with a solo home run of his own in the bottom half of the inning—his second homer in as many days and third this season—restoring a two-run cushion for Washington. Taggart’s homer went 417 feet to deep right field.

In later innings, Braeden Terry and Blake Wilson each contributed RBI singles that helped secure the final score at 8-5. Tommy Brandenburg earned his fourth save of the season by pitching four scoreless innings out of the bullpen, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out one batter. Hayden Lewis was credited with the win after pitching five innings with six hits allowed and three strikeouts.

Offensively, Sam DeCarlo, Braeden Terry, Blake Wilson, and Ethan Swidler each recorded two hits for Washington. Taggart and DeCarlo also drew two walks apiece out of five total for their team.

Looking ahead, Washington will play Portland on Tuesday at Ridgefield Raptors stadium in Ridgefield for a neutral site matchup.
