The Washington Huskies lost to top-ranked UCLA, 6-1, in their final regular season baseball game on May 16.
The loss leaves the Huskies with a record of 23 wins and 31 losses overall, and a conference record of 12-18. As a result, Washington is set as the No. 11 seed for the upcoming Big Ten Tournament and will face Ohio State at 7 p.m. Pacific Time on Tuesday, May 19.
In the game against UCLA, Washington allowed four runs in the first inning but managed to score one run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Spear. Pitchers Jay Miller, Cooper McBride, and Peysen Sweeney combined for seven innings pitched out of nine total innings. Together they held UCLA to six hits, two runs, and one walk while recording eight strikeouts.
Miller delivered his best performance of the season with four innings pitched, allowing only one run and striking out five batters. McBride made his season debut during this game and threw for two-and-a-third innings with two hits allowed, one run given up, three strikeouts recorded, and no walks issued. Nolan Rowe also made his debut for Washington as a pinch runner before finishing out the game at catcher.
The Huskies will now prepare for their opening match in the Big Ten Tournament against Ohio State on Tuesday evening.
