The Washington Huskies lost 6-4 to Michigan State on April 17 in the first game of their baseball series at Husky Ballpark.
The result brings the Huskies’ season record to 16 wins and 21 losses, with a conference mark of 7-9 in the Big Ten. The outcome is significant as it impacts Washington’s standing within the conference and sets the tone for the remainder of their series against Michigan State.
Noah Kenney started for Washington and pitched into the ninth inning, recording a career-best performance with 8.1 innings. He allowed six runs—five earned—on five hits, walked two batters, and struck out six during his ninth start of the season. Sam DeCarlo contributed offensively by hitting his fifth home run of the year in the fifth inning and later adding a double that sparked a three-run rally in the seventh.
Ty Cowan singled to drive in DeCarlo, while patient at-bats resulted in two bases-loaded walks that brought Washington within one run at 5-4. Despite out-hitting Michigan State with ten hits compared to six from their opponents, Washington was unable to produce a decisive hit late in the game. The Spartans added an insurance run in the ninth inning.
Cowan led all Husky hitters with three hits; DeCarlo and Landon Young each had two, while Mic Paul, Braeden Terry, and Blake Wilson each contributed one hit. Tommy Brandenburg finished pitching for Washington by recording the final two outs after Kenney exited.
Washington will attempt to even up their series against Michigan State when they meet again Saturday night at Husky Ballpark.
