The Washington Huskies lost the opening game of their baseball series against No. 13 Oregon on May 1, with a final score of 6-4. The Huskies had led most of the game but could not hold off a late surge from Oregon.
This loss puts Washington at a season record of 20 wins and 25 losses, with a conference record of 9-13 in Big Ten play. The result is significant as it affects the team’s standing in the league and their prospects for postseason play.
Washington started strong, taking a 3-1 lead in the first inning after Blake Wilson hit a bases-clearing double that drove in three runs. The team added another run in the third when Ethan Swidler scored on a wild pitch. Pitcher Jackson Thomas delivered six innings without allowing an earned run and struck out three batters while giving up only two hits.
The Huskies’ defense was highlighted by Aidan Dougherty’s leaping catch at right field, which prevented what would have been an Oregon home run and saved two runs in the seventh inning. However, despite these efforts, Oregon managed to rally with four runs in the eighth inning to secure the win.
Mic Paul and Casen Taggart each recorded two hits for Washington, while Wilson led with three runs batted in. The teams will meet again for game two on Saturday night at 7 p.m., where Washington will look to even up the series.
