Washington lost its final nonconference baseball game of the regular season to Seattle University by a score of 4-3, according to a May 5 announcement. The game took place in Bellevue, with the Huskies now holding a record of 21-27 for the season.
The importance of this matchup lay in it being the last opportunity for Washington to build momentum before returning to conference play. After allowing four runs in the first inning, Washington responded in the second when Landon Young hit a triple and was brought home on an Ian Draper RBI groundout. Kevin Spear added another run with a sacrifice fly, and Jackson Hotchkiss hit a solo home run.
Hotchkiss has now recorded 17 home runs this year and has homered in each of his last three games. Despite holding Seattle U scoreless over seven innings after their early four-run lead, Washington was unable to mount enough offense for a comeback.
Jaxson Gore started on the mound for Washington, pitching two innings and giving up five hits and four runs. Relief pitchers Tyler Walker, Liam Lierman, Tommy Brandenburg, and Gunnar Nichols combined for seven strikeouts while allowing just five hits without any additional runs.
Both Hotchkiss and Young led Washington’s offense with two hits each. Young’s triple marked the team’s sixteenth three-bagger this season.
Looking ahead, Washington will begin a three-game series at Penn State starting Friday at 2:30 p.m. Pacific Time.
