The Washington men’s rowing team will christen and dedicate its newest rowing shell, the Austin J. Regier ’20, at Conibear Shellhouse on April 29.
The dedication honors Austin Regier, a former Husky oarsman who passed away in November of 2024. The new eight-oared Empacher shell bears his name as a tribute to his contributions to the team and his legacy at the university.
Regier joined the Washington rowing program as a walk-on after graduating from Mount Rainier High School. He earned recognition as a two-time IRA All-Academic honoree and returned for a fifth year in 2021 following the cancellation of his senior season due to the pandemic. That year, he helped Washington win both Pac-12 and IRA titles in the four event. After completing his degree in industrial and systems engineering, Regier joined teammate Madison Molitor on the NYYC American Magic team, competing in the 2024 Americas Cup yacht race before passing away during a free diving accident in the Philippines.
Friday’s boat dedication is part of a larger celebration that includes the Varsity Boat Club Reunion starting at 5:00 p.m., with boat dedications beginning at 6:00 p.m. The women’s team will also christen a new shell named for former rower and longtime head coach Jan Harville.
On Saturday, Washington’s varsity eight will compete using the new shell during the 40th Windermere Cup against Northeastern University and Great Britain’s national team, which won Olympic gold.
