The Washington men’s rowing team, ranked No. 1, will compete against its main rival, No. 2-ranked California, at The Dual on April 21 at Redwood Shores. This event is considered the most significant and longest-running rowing rivalry in the West.
This year, scheduling conflicts have led to the men’s and women’s Duals being held on separate weekends. Earlier this month, the Washington women secured victories in six out of seven races at Redwood Shores.
Racing for the men begins at 9:10 a.m., with events including the Fifth Varsity Eight, Freshman Eight, Third Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, and concluding with the Varsity Eight race for the Schoch Cup. Fans can watch a video stream of the regatta on overnght.com by subscription or follow live timing updates on HereNow.com. The event will also feature women’s duals between Stanford and Texas as well as lightweight races involving Stanford and Brown.
The history between Washington and California’s men’s varsity eight teams dates back to 1903 with 113 previous meetings; Washington leads with a record of 78 wins, 34 losses, and one tie in this series. The Schoch Cup is awarded annually in honor of Delos “Dutch” Schoch from Washington’s class of 1936. Other longstanding series include second varsity eight matchups since 1939—Washington has won 54 out of those—and freshman eight races that began that same year where Washington has claimed victory in 61 out of 82 contests.
Last year at Redwood Shores saw Washington’s men win four out of five races against California.
Following The Dual against Cal, the Huskies will prepare for next week’s Windermere Cup/Opening Day Regatta on May 2. This year’s regatta will host crews from Great Britain as well as Canada’s national women’s team.
