The No. 16 Washington softball team defeated Iowa 16-7 at Hawkeye Softball Complex on Mar. 27, coming from behind to secure the win in the opening game of their series.

The victory keeps Washington undefeated in conference play with a record of 10-0 and extends its winning streak to 18 games. The result also brings the Huskies’ overall season record to 28-6.

Morgan Reimer earned her eighteenth win of the season after pitching six and one-third innings, while Ryan Maddox closed out the game by recording the final two outs. The game saw Iowa take an early lead with three runs by the end of the second inning, but Jade Bubke responded for Washington with a home run at the start of the third inning. Jadyn Glab followed up with a three-run homer, giving Washington a brief lead before Iowa tied it again in their half of the third.

Washington pulled away during an explosive fourth inning, scoring seven runs on just one hit. Sophi Mazzola was hit by a pitch and Bubke drew a walk before Kaycie Burdick’s single loaded the bases. Walks, sacrifice flies from Giselle Alvarez and Melody Acevedo, as well as errors and wild pitches contributed to extending Washington’s advantage.

Alvarez added a two-run homer in the seventh—her third home run over two games—and Ava Carroll hit another home run that brought in three more runs for Washington. Despite Iowa adding two more runs late in the game, it was not enough to close Washington’s large lead.

Game two is scheduled for Saturday at Hawkeye Softball Complex.
