The Washington Huskies softball team lost to No. 24 Stanford, 8-4, in the final game of the Stanford Classic on April 4 at the Stanford Softball Stadium.

The loss ends a strong run for the Huskies, who entered the matchup with a record of 31-9 and an undefeated Big Ten mark. The result matters as it marks only their ninth defeat this season and closes out their participation in the tournament.

Three players—Melody Acevedo, Giselle Alvarez, and Sophi Mazzola—each recorded two hits during the game. Washington took an early lead by scoring two runs in the first inning after singles from Alexis DeBoer and an RBI double from Alvarez. Ally Hetzel added another run with an RBI single.

Acevedo led off another scoring sequence in the second inning with a single before Mazzola contributed her own hit. Kaycie Burdick brought home Acevedo for Washington’s third run and later helped Mazzola score by attempting to steal second base. Despite back-to-back hits from Ava Carroll and Acevedo in the third inning, both runners were left stranded.

Stanford responded strongly starting in the bottom of the third inning with consecutive home runs that narrowed Washington’s lead to two runs before taking over with a total of five runs by inning’s end. The Cardinal continued their momentum with a two-run homer in the fifth and another run scored in the sixth to set up their final margin.

Washington will return to Big Ten play next week when they host Minnesota for a three-game series beginning Friday, April 10.
