Washington women’s tennis was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament in the second round after a 4-0 loss to seventh-seeded Virginia on May 3 at the Boar’s Head Resort in Charlottesville. The match marked the end of a season that saw several program milestones for the Huskies.
The doubles pairing of Alexia Jacobs and Marie Weissheim secured their biggest ranked win of the season, defeating Virginia’s No. 25-ranked duo with a score of 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. However, Virginia won doubles matches at both No. 1 and No. 3 positions to claim the doubles point.
In singles play, Washington fought hard but lost on Courts 4, 5, and 6 as Virginia clinched victory. Reece Carter led her match on Court 1 after taking the first set, while Erika Matsuda also had an early lead against her opponent ranked No. 28 nationally following a first-set win.
Despite this defeat, Washington achieved notable successes during the season: Robin Stephenson became the all-time winningest coach in program history; they recorded their best start ever with twelve consecutive wins; completed their first undefeated home season since 2003; notched back-to-back twenty-win seasons for the first time since early eighties; and made consecutive appearances in NCAA Tournament’s second round for only the second time since over a decade ago.
The team concluded its campaign reflecting on these accomplishments as it looks ahead to future seasons.
