The No. 21 Washington women’s tennis team lost its first match of the season to Nebraska, 4-3, on March 20 at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
This result brings Washington’s record to 12 wins and one loss overall, with a 3-1 standing in Big Ten conference play. The match was closely contested, with both teams exchanging points throughout the evening.
In doubles play, Alexia Jacobs and Marie Weissheim secured a win for Washington with a score of 6-1. However, Nebraska won the next two doubles matches, giving them an early lead heading into singles competition.
Reece Carter, ranked No. 64 nationally, earned her twelfth singles victory of the season by winning in straight sets (6-1, 6-2), matching her total from last year. Weissheim followed with another straight-set win (6-4, 6-2) on Court 5. Jermine Sherif also contributed by coming back after losing her first set to win the next two sets decisively (2-6, 6-1, 6-1).
Despite these efforts, Nebraska claimed victories in the final three singles matches on Courts 1, 6 and 3 to secure the overall win. The Huskies will look to recover when they face No. 41 Iowa on Sunday at a match scheduled for a morning start.
The outcome marks a turning point for Washington as it seeks to maintain its strong performance in upcoming conference games.
