The University of Washington women’s tennis team, ranked No. 22 nationally, will travel for its final regular season road matches with contests against No. 56 Penn State on Friday and No. 5 Ohio State on Sunday, according to an April 16 announcement from the program.
These matches are significant as they mark the end of Washington’s regular season away games before the start of postseason play. The Huskies currently hold a strong overall record of 17-3 and are 8-3 in Big Ten competition.
Through their first 20 matches, Washington has accumulated a combined singles and doubles record of 103-26. The team has also excelled in doubles play, winning the opening doubles point in 18 out of their first 20 matches this season with an overall doubles record of 39-8. Notably, they remain unbeaten on Court Two in doubles action.
In recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings released April 14, Washington holds the No. 22 spot as a team. Erika Matsuda is ranked No. 82 and Reece Carter is ranked No. 84 in singles, while Matsuda and Carina Syrtveit are listed at No. 82 in doubles rankings.
Under head coach Robin Stephenson since her arrival in Seattle in 2015, the Huskies have compiled a home record of 115-29 and have achieved double-digit home wins four times over the past five seasons—totaling sixty-one victories during that span—and recently completed their first undefeated regular season at Montlake since 2003.
Penn State enters Friday’s match with a record of thirteen wins and nine losses overall (4-7 Big Ten). Their top-ranked doubles pair Maelie Monfils and Olivia Dorner is currently listed at No.89 nationally; this weekend marks the first meeting between these two programs.
Ohio State brings a nineteen-and-three overall mark (10-1 Big Ten) into Sunday’s match-up with four pairs featured among ITA’s top eighty-four for doubles; two Buckeyes singles players rank within ITA’s top five nationally.
Following these road contests, Washington will remain in Columbus for the upcoming Big Ten Tournament beginning April 23.
