The Seattle Mariners secured a 5-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on April 19, clinching the series with a performance highlighted by Bryan Woo’s pitching and three home runs from his teammates.
This win is significant for the Mariners as it came against the Rangers, considered early favorites in the American League West. The game also demonstrated how strong pitching combined with offensive support can lead to success for Seattle.
Woo delivered seven innings of two-run baseball, nearly achieving a complete-game shutout before allowing two runs in the seventh inning. He was supported by home runs from Rob Refsnyder, J.P. Crawford, and Randy Arozarena. “You could see a little more determination on his face today,” Mariners manager Dan Wilson said about Woo’s performance.
Despite his strong outing, Woo expressed dissatisfaction with giving up runs late in the game. “It’s just the concept of keeping teams down when they’re down,” Woo said. “Not giving them any life when we got a lead… Not letting them breathe in any way.” His frustration was evident as he left the mound after issuing a walk that led to scoring opportunities for Texas.
Refsnyder commented on Woo’s mindset and leadership: “Just very determined from last year… He had the goals in mind and where he wanted the team to be… But just to have that quiet confidence — but also in that moment, be a leader amongst men — was pretty cool.” The team has struggled with run support during Woo’s starts this season despite his impressive 2.25 earned run average; Sunday’s three home runs marked an improvement for Seattle’s offense.
The Mariners’ ability to hit multiple home runs has proven effective: last year they won 28 out of 34 games when hitting three or more homers. This latest win suggests that combining solid pitching performances like Woo’s with timely power hitting could be key to their success moving forward.
