After 12 Seattle Police officers were injured during recent protests that lead to two arrests, the department released a video of the incidents from body-worn cameras, including one engagement in that resulted in the hospitalization of an officer who attempted to prevent a protester from blocking a security camera.
“One officer was struck in the neck and injured by fragmentation from one of the explosions resulting in that officer being hospitalized,” the Seattle Police Department said in a press release. “During the confrontation, officers used OC spray and stop the assault from the crowd. Officers arrested one person for assault and a second for theft of a police bicycle.”
Another peaceful protest turned violent three hours into the protest, after individuals carrying baseball bats joined the protest and proceeded to march south on Fifth Avenue, smashing windows and painting graffiti, according to the release.
Reaching the Seattle Police Headquarters and Seattle Municipal Court, the protesters broke windows and applied spray paint to both buildings, according to the press release. The group continued up Third Avenue and carried on with destruction to privately-owned buildings.
At the West Precinct, protesters attacked police on guard outside the building, launching rocks, fireworks and bottles, according to the press release. Twelve officers were injured, including lacerations and burns, with one officer transported to the hospital.
One individual was arrested for assault and another for attempting to steal a police bicycle.
