Mayor Jenny Durkan has extended Seattle’s moratorium on evictions that applies not just to residential renters, but to non profit organizations and small businesses as well, leaving the fate of those renters undecided until at least Dec. 31, according to a press release on the city’s website.
The city has awarded a new round of 72 small business grants at a cost of $10,000 each.
Durkin said that pushing out the deadline for when renters will have to make up for months of missed rental payments or face eviction serves as a “critical tool” in the city’s effort to preserve small businesses and prevent residential renters from finding themselves without a place to live, according to the press release.
The release did not indicate what Durkin’s plan is for dealing with the eviction crisis once the moratorium ends, or if property owners default on taxes, mortgages and other expenses while no longer being able to collect rent and being prohibited from charging late fees.
