The Seattle Public Schools joined a national school coalition that will further leverage the partnership's buying power for school meals and supplies.
"Our new members represent some of the finest and most influential school food service programs in the country, and we look forward to their contributions to USFA's ongoing success," Michael Rosenberger, chairman of USFA and executive director of Food and Child Nutrition Services for Dallas Independent School District, said in the Urban School Food Alliance release.
The Urban School Food Alliance has 15 members stretching from New York City to Los Angeles and also includes major metro districts Chicago, Miami, Dallas and now Seattle.
"They expand our geographical footprint into the Pacific Northwest and strengthen our membership in Texas," Rosenberger. "These three districts will increase our organizational effectiveness in our core USFA competencies of best practice sharing, advocacy and procurement."
Portland Public Schools and the Austin Independent School District also recently joined.
Combined, the districts represent 3.8 million students with an $825 million purchasing power for food. The coalition believes in using its financial strength “to drive school food quality up through socially responsible practices, and advocating for policy changes that improve access to meals for all children.”
