The Seattle Sounders FC has been engaging in special programming as part of Black History Month in order to help the community celebrate diversity while also complimenting initiatives put forward by Major League Soccer.
The club kicked off the month by introducing the Sounders FC Black History Month InTENtional List, the Sounders FC said in a release.
In a partnership with Intentionalist, the Rave Green highlighted black-owned businesses around Seattle, sponsoring opportunities for customers to receive a free highlighted item by mentioning Sounders FC and Intentionalist when they order.
The Rave Foundation and Sounders FC have been bringing attention to the stories of black professional athletes and helping them have a louder voice in the community, culminating in a giveaway of sports equipment, the release states.
In collaboration with Good Sports and MLS WORKS, the giveaway will involve various sports equipment for youth in Yesler Terrace, NewHolly and High Point.
The equipment giveaway took place on Feb. 24.
“Be Inspired!”, a video for the Seattle Housing Authority’s (SHA) Black History Month programming, was created with the inclusion of black representatives from Sounders FC, OL Reign and the Seattle Storm, according to the release.
“It’s wonderful to have partners like RAVE and Sounders FC to help us with meaningful virtual programming for our families,” Phillippia Goldsmith, a community builder with SHA’s NewHolly, said in the release. “Right now, engaging kids online in new and different ways is critical, and we know providing our families Black History Month education from the professional athlete perspective will certainly inspire Seattle Housing Authority youth.”
A Books and Balls giveaway was set to happen on Feb. 24 at SHA’s High Point community hub in West Seattle, the release said. The Books and Balls giveaway is a continuation of the program in a partnership of Sounders FC, the Rave Foundation and the Northwest African American Museum and involves the distribution of free black-centered children’s books and high-quality soccer balls.
