MOD Pizza, a Bellevue, Washington-based pizza chain restaurant, continued to show growth during the COVID-19 pandemic adding 22 new outlets in 2020.

"While our very strong start to 2020 was disrupted by the pandemic, resulting in an initial dramatic decline in sales followed by a gradual recovery, I'm incredibly proud of the way our team responded to these unprecedented and uniquely challenging times," Scott Svenson, MOD Pizza CEO, said in a release posted to Business Wire. "During the uncertainties of the past year, we drew strength and resilience from our purpose. As a result, not only did we successfully manage through the crisis, but we improved the business in multiple ways that will help us emerge from this crisis stronger than ever."

Company leaders said operations changed to meet consumers' needs during the pandemic, including upgraded digital marketing and pizza delivery, introducing curb-side delivery and pick-up. Also, pizza delivery expanded by partnering with DoorDash, UberEats and Postmates, online food ordering delivery systems.

The report said digitally ordered food accounted for 40% of the firm's revenue in 2020.

In addition to adding 22 new stores, 19 of them corporate-owned and three franchises, the company added 13 MOD franchise outlets to its chain in North Carolina. It introduced new outlets to Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee.

Recognizing the need for relief during the pandemic MOD in its "Operation Hunger," it delivered more than 10,000 hot meals to vulnerable people, including the homeless and beyond 10,000 pizzas and salads to homeless shelters in the city of San Jose.

MOD Pizza has been named the fastest-growing pizza chain for four straight years by Technomic, a foodservice consulting firm, and the best-loved pizza chain by Foodable Network, a restaurant digital media company.

"We, therefore, enter 2021 with immense optimism about the future as we look forward to the opening of our 500th location and a pipeline of operational improvements and innovations that will further enhance the customer experience," Svenson said.
