Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate as the festival of lights begins this evening.
Erica L. Martin, PhD, executive director and assistant dean of Academic Affairs and an instructor of Hebrew Scriptures, shares a reflection on the importance of the holiday:
“In my family, Hanukkah is a time of gathering to light candles and eat festival foods, and it is also a time to encourage each other in our dedication to resisting injustice in our world. Hanukkah is the Hebrew word for dedication. During time of the Maccabees, resistance meant overthrowing the Syrian army and re-dedicating the Temple in Jerusalem – where a one-day supply of oil miraculously lasted for “eight crazy nights.” The Hanukkah miracle inspires us in our dedication to repair this broken world, that and that the light in us, like the oil in the ancient Temple, will last throughout the struggle for justice.”
