Teach In on Racist Police Brutality
Wednesday, February 1 at 4:00 pm
Location: Room 110 or via Zoom
In the aftermath of the shocking and graphic killing of Tyre Nichols at the hands of police, we as a society – and especially those of us in the legal profession – are once again grappling with how to address police brutality and its often fatal consequences.
The usual questions abound. Why are we here once again, contending with a killing at the hands of police during a traffic stop? What law enforcement reforms have worked through the years to prevent more of these killings? What reforms have not worked? What roles do race and racism (systemic and structural) play, when both the police and the victim are of the same minoritized race? Is an entirely new approach to training the answer? Should we take police out of the business of traffic enforcement altogether? If so, who takes their place? Is there a role for Artificial Intelligence in the solutions?
