Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 7th district, has recently voiced concerns over the cessation of aid in various countries due to frozen deliveries and funding cuts by USAID. Through her social media posts, she highlights critical issues impacting health services globally.
On February 7, 2025, Rep. Jayapal shared her concerns regarding Myanmar's healthcare crisis: "In Myanmar, where there were 850,000 cases of Malaria in 2023, USAID helps deliver rapid tests and drugs. Now, these deliveries are frozen. And even if the supplies were to arrive, organizations that rely on USAID funding have no workers left to distribute the supplies."
Additionally, on the same day, she commented on the situation in Sudan: "In Sudan, a country currently being torn apart by a civil war, aid has been cut off. Their population, which is grappling with cholera, malaria, and measles, is now at higher risk of catching those diseases, spreading them, and dying from them."
She also addressed broader implications for global child health services: "USAID helps fund health centers in the more than 25 countries where two-thirds of all child deaths occur globally. Now nurses have been laid off and clinics have been closed in those countries — leaving children to die."
