Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who has been serving in the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, recently expressed her views on social media regarding Senate deliberations and historical parallels to current legislative measures. The congresswoman's tweets highlighted concerns about a Republican funding bill and historical instances of authoritarian policies.
On March 13, 2025, Rep. Jayapal tweeted about the ongoing Senate deliberations, stating: "2 things on Senate deliberations: 1. The GOP funding bill is NOT a continuing resolution. It is a 100% Republican funding bill that strips funding from veterans, food safety, public safety & gives Musk the keys to do everything DOGE is currently doing & strip Medicaid, Medicare..." She voiced strong opposition to what she perceives as detrimental impacts of the proposed GOP funding bill.
Later that day, she shared another tweet reflecting on historical events where communities were forced to self-identify under authoritarian regimes. She warned of potential dangers by saying: "Think about times in history where authoritarian leaders have tried to force communities they don’t like to sign up for a list and self-identify. It doesn’t end well. This is incredibly dangerous."
In another post at the same time, Rep. Jayapal referenced post-9/11 actions taken against certain ethnic groups in the United States: "This law was also used after 9/11, putting 13,000 people from Muslim-majority, Arab, African, and South Asian countries into deportation proceedings. It resulted in zero terrorism convictions and was later called inefficient and a waste of resources by Homeland Security." She criticized these measures as ineffective and resource-wasting.
