Police recovered a stolen gun with ammunition and narcotics during a traffic stop in the Rainier Valley Saturday.

Around 8:00 p.m., units working an anti-gun violence emphasis stopped a vehicle in the 9800 block of Martin Luther King Jr Way South after observing a traffic violation. Both the driver and passenger were contacted and identified by officers who confirmed the driver had an active felony warrant for narcotics.

Police took the man into custody and called for a tow since the vehicle was partially blocking the roadway and was not properly licensed.

While waiting for the tow, officers began an inventory search of the vehicle prior to it being impounded. The passenger attempted to hinder police from opening the car door and was taken into custody for obstructing.

During the inventory search, officers saw a handgun with a high capacity, drum style magazine inside the car. Police secured the vehicle and obtained a search warrant for the rest of the car.

Officers later served the warrant on the vehicle and recovered a 9mm semi-automatic handgun which was confirmed as stolen out of Puyallup. Police also seized a drum magazine with 25 rounds of ammunition, as well as a single round that was found in the chamber of the handgun.

A plastic vial containing 9 grams of crack cocaine was also recovered from the floorboard of the vehicle.

Police booked the 25-year-old driver into the King County Jail for unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of narcotics. The passenger was released with charges referred to the prosecutor’s office.
