This is the 100th anniversary of the Newbery awards, which is presented annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. It’s considered the the most prestigious award in children’s literature – and both of the most recent recipients happen to be local authors!

In addition to the Newbery, Donna Barba Higuera won the 2022 Pura Belpré award, which is presented annually to a Latino/Latina writer whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.
