Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a U.S. Congress member representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, has voiced strong opposition to a Republican funding bill through her recent tweets. Jayapal, who succeeded Jim McDermott and previously served in the Washington State Senate, has expressed concerns over the implications of this legislation.
On March 10, 2025, Rep. Jayapal criticized the Republican funding bill for its cuts to essential services while favoring Elon Musk. She stated: "The Republican funding bill cuts food assistance, rent assistance, and rural transportation safety projects — all while handing Elon Musk the keys to the government." Jayapal emphasized that Democrats would not support measures detrimental to American families.
In a subsequent tweet on March 11, 2025, she addressed comments by Elon Musk regarding Social Security benefits. She wrote: "Musk just said the not-so-quiet part out loud. He wants to take a chain saw to your Social Security benefits." Jayapal argued that the GOP funding bill could enable such actions by providing Musk with necessary tools.
Later on March 11, she referred to statements made by JD Vance about former President Trump’s intentions concerning congressional budgets. Jayapal remarked: "There it is. JD Vance admits that Trump will take Congress’ budget, ignore it." She characterized this as granting Elon Musk undue financial control.
